En 1947 en Brooklyn, Nueva York.

2. Tus primeras experiencias con caballos antes de trabajar como corresponsal

2. Your first experiences with horses before working as a correspondent.

Yo estaba trabajando en Wall Street cuando mi amigo me preguntó si quería ir con uno de sus amigos al hipódromo Rooselvelt (carreras de caballos, pero con arneses). Yo inmediatamente me enamoré viendo las carreras de caballos y analizando sus últimas actuaciones. Después, El amigo de mi amigo me llevó a las carreras de caballos y me dijo sobre sus caballos favoritos, Graustark y un potro llamado Damascus. Ellos se convirtieron en mis favoritos y eso me atrapó. Me obsesioné con las carreras de caballos y empecé a leer todo lo que conseguía sobre eso.      

I was working on Wall Street when my friend asked if I wanted to go with one of his friends to Roosevelt Raceway (harness racing track). I immediately fell in love with watching the horses race and analyzing the past performances. My friend's friend then introduced me to flat racing and told me about his favorite horses Graustark and a young horse named. Damascus. They became my favorites and I was hooked. I became obsessed with racing and began reading everything I could get my hands on.

3. What article that you have written in Daily Racing Form and Blood Horse is special for you and why?

Hay muchos que son mis favoritos. El más especial fue mi carta de amor a mi esposa, sin ella no sería nada hoy. Ella me dio mi vida. Yo digo que nací el día que la conocí. Yo escribí sobre nuestra vida juntos, comenzando en las carreras (ella llegó a ser la coordinadora de relaciones públicas de NYRA) y todas las grandes aventuras en las carreras que tuvimos, culminando con mi inducción al Salón de la Fama y teniéndola a ella, a mi hija, la familia y mis amigos. Desde un punto de vista hípico: El Kentucky Derby de Smarty Jones, la Breeder’s Cup Classic de Mucho Macho Man, la segunda Breeder’s Cup Classic de Tiznow y el Belmont Stakes de American Pharoah. También todas mis columnas sobre Damascus y Dr. Fager son especiales.  

There are so many favorites. The most special was my Love Letter to my wife, without whom I would be nothing today. She gave me my life. I always say I was born on the day we met. I wrote about our life together, starting in racing (she became the public relations coordinator for NYRA) and all the great racing adventures we had, culminating with my induction into the Hall of Fame and having her, my daughter, and family and friends there. From a purely racing standpoint, Smarty Jones' Kentucky Derby, Mucho Macho Man's BC Classic, Tiznow' second BC Classic, and American Pharoah' Belmont Stakes. Also, all my columns on Damascus and Dr. Fager are special.

4. ¿Cuáles son tus Kentucky Derby y Breeder’s Cup especiales para ti y por qué?

4. What Kentucky Derby and Breeder´s Cup is special for you and why?

Las que te mencioné. El Derby de Smarty Jones porque todas esas grandes historias de regresos y lo del establo en Philadelphia Park. Mucho Macho Man tiene una historia asombrosa con su trainer Kathy Ritvo regresando virtualmente de la muerte y yo consiguiendo esa gran historia. Tiznow por el drama y las emociones viniendo con menos de dos meses del ataque al World Trade Center y la atmósfera surreal en la pista. Y el Belmont de American Pharoah por las emociones increíbles y el frenesí de los fanáticos y por el nivel de ruido ensordecedor después de esperar 37 años. Las tribunas literalmente temblaban y yo muy cerca de Bob Baffert y la familia Zayat.

The ones I mentioned. Smarty Jones' Derby because of all the great back stories and having him stable only 30 minutes from me at Philadelphia Park. Mucho Macho Man also had an amazing story with him and trainer Kathy Ritvo virtually returning from the dead and me getting the whole story. Tiznow because of of its drama and emotions coming less than 2 months after the attack on the World Trade Center and the surreal atmosphere at the track. And American Pharoah's Belmont because of the incredible emotions and frenzy from the fans and the deafening noise level after waiting for 37 years. The grandstand literally shook. And I was close to Bob Baffert and the Zayat family.

5. ¿Cuáles son en tu opinión los 3 mejores jockeys, los 3 mejores entrenadores y los 3 mejores caballos que tú has visto en los Estados Unidos?

5. What are in your opinion the best 3 jockeys, 3 trainers and 3 horses you have seen in USA.

Los tres mejores jockeys son - Jerry Bayley, Steve Caughten y Ángel Cordero Junior - Allen Jerkens, Bob Baffert y muy cerca (empate) entre Todd Pletcher y Wayne Lukas.

Three best jockeys - Jerry Bailey, Steve Cauthen and Angel Cordero. Trainers - Allen Jerkens, Bob Baffert. and very close (tie) between Todd Pletcher and Wayne Lukas.

6. Tu opinión sobre Cañonero, ganador del Kentucky Derby y del Preakness Stakes en 1971.

6. Your opinion about Canonero, the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner in 1971.

El caballo más asombroso y lo más asombrosos Kentucky Derby y Preakness Stakes que yo haya visto. Un caballo verdaderamente talentoso que llegó a ser víctima de adversarios con malos consejos y un entrenador (Buddy Hirsch) que nunca realmente lo llegó a conocer. Le tocó a Gustavo Ávila venir de Venezuela a enderezarlo y hacerlo feliz de nuevo y nosotros vimos al viejo Cañonero en el Stymie Handicap… Él tuvo que sobreponerse bastante a problemas físicos durante la Triple Corona. Él estuvo al 70% en el Belmont Stakes y no querían correrlo sus allegados  correrlo y todavía corriendo con el corazón llega cuarto.

The most amazing horse and amazing Kentucky Derby and Preakness I have ever seen. A truly talented horse who became a victim of too many advisors with bad advice and a trainer at 4 (Buddy Hirsch) who never really got to know him. It took Gustavo Avila coming from Venezuela to straighten him out and make him happy again, and we saw the old Canonero in the Stymie Handicap. He just had to overcome so much, especially numerous physical problems, during the Triple Crown. He was only 70 percent of himself in the Belmont Stakes and many pleaded with his connections not to run. He still ran his heart out to finish fourth

7. Algo increíble que usted haya vivido en relación con el Hipismo

7. Something incredible you have lived in relation with the horse racing.

Ser invitado al Jockey Club Uruguayo y a Dubai a la Dubai World Cup y a la Inauguración de la pista de carreras de Meydan. Mi esposa y mi hija vivieron conmigo, fuimos tratados como estrellas de rock. Nos colocaron la alfombra roja realmente. Fueron experiencias que te cambian la vida. Estaba muy emocionado en compartir esto con mi esposa y mi hija.

Being invited to Uruguay by the Uruguayan Jockey Club and to Dubai for the Dubai World Cup and the opening of Meydan Race Course. My wife and daughter came with me both times and we were treated like rock stars. They really rolled out the red carpet for me. Both were life changing experiences. I was so thrilled to share it all with my wife and daughter.

8. Tú más importante consejo a los lectores

8. Your most important advice to the readers.

No sé mucho sobre tus lectores, pero siempre busquen la belleza de los caballos y del deporte. Las emociones son incomparables. Y la unión entre humanos y caballos en todos los lugares del mundo son tan fuertes como siempre después de muchos siglos. Así que saquen la capa de negatividad y mantente enfocado en la belleza y pureza que hay debajo en sus semillas.

I don’t know much about your readers, but always keep looking for the beauty of the horse and the sport. The thrills they give are incomparable. And the bond between humans and horses everywhere in the world are as strong as ever after so many centuries. So strip away the layer of negativity that you read about and keep focusing on the beauty and the purity that lies beneath at its core.
