Entrevista a Mr. Simon Holt

1. ¿Cuál es tu nombre completo y dónde y cuándo naciste?

1. What is your full name and when and where were you born?

Simon Richard Holt. Nací en un pueblo pequeño cerca de Brighton en la costa sur de Inglaterra en 1964.

Simon Richard Holt. I was born in a small town near Brighton on the south coast of England in 1964.

2. ¿Cómo entraste al deporte hípico?

2. How did you get into the sport of horse racing?

Bueno, el deporte me atrajo cuando era muy joven y por una pequeña razón realmente: no tenía experiencia en el hipismo. Pero mis padres apoyaron mi interés y me llevaron a las carreras, Albeit, insistió mi padre en llevarme.  Fui aprendiendo algo de hipismo y fui muy afortunado en trabajar para una publicación hípica después de dejar el colegio y más tarde conseguí trabajo en la revista “The Sporting Life”, un histórico periódico comercial. Allí hice un poco de todo desde editar hasta reportaje en cancha, escribir artículos y unos pocos años después, se me presentó la oportunidad de tratar de narrar algunas carreras para ser transmitidas en casas de apuestas y luego tuve el deseo de mejorar la calidad de los comentarios.        

Well, the sport attracted me when I was very young and for little reason really as I have no racing background. But my parents indulged my interest and took me racing, albeit that my father insisted on being allowed to sulk all afternoon. I built up quite a bit of knowledge at a young age and was very lucky to work for a racing publisher after leaving school, and later got a job on ‘The Sporting Life’, a historical trade newspaper. On the ‘Life’, I did a bit of everything from sub-editing to racecourse-reporting, tipping, writing features and columns and, a few years later, an opportunity arose to try some race-calling as pictures were to be broadcast into betting shops for the first time, and there was a desire to improve the quality of the commentaries.

3. ¿Cuándo y dónde narraste tu primera carrera?

3. When and where did you call your first race?

Mi primera carrera fue narrada con 4 ejemplares, 1000 metros, dosañeros, en Folkstone (ahora cerrado) en el verano de 1988. Fue difícil al comienzo con un bajo nivel.

My first racecourse call was in a four-runner, five-furlong, two-year-old selling race at Folkestone (now closed) in the summer of 1988. It would be very difficult to begin at a lower level.

4. ¿Quién fue la persona que más te influenció en tu carrera?

4. Who was the most influential person in your career?

Son varios, pero Andrew Franklin, el productor de “Carreras del Canal 4” el cual fue el mayor proveedor del espectáculo hípico en televisión por muchos años en Gran Bretaña, me dio la oportunidad de narrar las grandes carreras en ese país. Él tuvo el don como directos de darme confianza y convertirse en mi amigo, pero sin ninguna duda, sacó lo mejor de mí.

There would be quite a few but Andrew Franklin, the producer of ‘Channel 4 Racing’ which was the main terrestrial television provider of horse racing for many years in Britain, gave me the opportunity to call some of the greatest races run in this country. He had a gift for man management, encouraging confidence and becoming your friend, but also leaving you in no doubt that, when he asked you to do something, you did it. He brought the best out of me.

5. ¿Qué es lo que más disfrutas al narrar una carrera y qué es lo más difícil? 

5. What do you enjoy most about calling a race and what is the most difficult?

Narrar una carrera es como caminar en una cuerda mental, tú confías en tú habilidad para recordar los colores y los nombres y además debes dar una narración exacta y emocionante de la carrera. Ya con la edad, el reto es que tu cerebro este bien y trates de narrar perfecto. En Gran Bretaña, tenemos muchas carreras, pistas rectas y esas son una prueba difícil especialmente cuando se dividen en dos grupos. Por ejemplo, carreras como Wokingham y Royal Hunt Cup en la Royal Ascot son muy difíciles pues tienen alrededor de 26 ejemplares.

Calling horse races is like walking a mental tightrope; you are trusting your ability to remember the names and the colours, and you must produce an accurate and maybe an exciting description of the race. As I am getting a bit older, I think this challenge is good for my brain and I still enjoy trying to produce a perfect call. In Britain, we have many races on long, straight courses and these can provide a difficult test especially if the field splits into two groups. For example, races like the Wokingham and Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot are very difficult with fields of around 26 runners.

6. ¿Tu caballo favorito en una carrera en la cual tu hayas narrado y la mejor carrera que tu hayas narrado?

6. Who is your favourite horse you have called and the best race you have called?

En pista plana tiene que ser Frankel cuyas victorias narré y fueron alrededor de 14. Su victoria en el Juddmonte International donde le ganó a múltiples ganadores Grado 1 fue increíble. Él fue impresionante. Carreras de salto son muy populares en Gran Bretaña e Irlanda y narrar la Cheltenham Gold Cup es lo más resaltante de mi año. Es la prueba suprema de las carreras de salto y la victoria de Kauto Star, un talentoso y versátil caballo, impresionante.

The Flat horse who stands out in my career has to be Frankel who I was fortunate to call winning many of his 14 races. He won them all but his victory in the Juddmonte International at York where he beat multiple Group One winners on the bridle was unbelievable. He was outstanding. Jumps racing is very popular in Britain and Ireland, and calling the Cheltenham Gold Cup is a highlight of my year. It is the supreme test of a staying steeplechaser and the victories of Kauto Star, a really talented and versatile horse, stand out.

7. Si pudieras ¿qué cambiarías del hipismo?

7. If there is anything you could change about horse racing, what would it be?

Creo que la variedad de carreras en el mundo es buena y el aumento y la internacionalización del deporte hípico en los últimos años provee nuevas oportunidades e intereses. En nuestro hipismo en Gran Bretaña, tenemos una gran calidad de caballos, pero los premios son bajos. En otros países como: Australia, Hong Kong y Francia los premios de las apuestas son mejores, esto motivado a casas de apuestas independientes y a los impuestos del gobierno lo cual origina un monopolio en las apuestas.

I think the variety of horse racing round the world is a good thing and the increasing internationalization of the sport in recent years is providing opportunities and adding interest. Domestically, we have very high quality horses but a terrible funding system which means that prize money is too low. In other countries such as Australia, Hong Kong and France, the prize money is funded from pool betting only whereas in Britain, punters have a historic preference for betting with independent bookmakers who give less money to the sport (via government taxation) than would be the case if we had a pool-betting monopoly.

8. ¿Algo que sorprendería a la gente de ti?

8. What is something that would surprise people about you?

Aunque soy feliz hablando ante una cámara y narrando carreras a grandes audiencias, soy una persona reservada lejos de las pistas. Grandes reuniones sociales no son para mí y mi vida tranquila en mi hogar no tiene comparación y están muy lejos de mi vida en las carreras de caballos.

Although I am happy to talk into a camera and call races to big audiences, I am quite a reserved person away from the track. Large social gatherings are definitely not my thing and my home life is quiet by comparison, and very separate from my racing life.

9. ¿Cuál es tu hobby, deporte, comida, lugar, película, música, bebida, libro y profesor preferidos?

9. What is your favourite: hobby, sport, food, place, movie, music, drink, book and teacher?

Solía jugar Golf, pero una operación en la espalda terminó mi práctica con el Golf, disfruto el tenis, he sido muy afortunado en viajar por todo el mundo, profesionalmente y de vacaciones y por esto diría que Suráfrica y Tailandia son maravillosos destinos. La comida de Tailandia es buena. Me gusta mucho el cine y para mi es difícil dar una película como la mejor pero El Padrino parte II es increíble, algo raro en una segunda parte. Mis gustos musicales son eclécticos y van desde lo clásico y la ópera hasta Los Beatles, Frank Sinatra, Elvis y éxitos de los 80 con artistas como Ed Sheeran y Bruno Mars. Aunque las bebidas han sido parte de mi vida, no soy bebedor. Un vino rojo italiano o español son buenos. Leo en vacaciones o durante el invierno o cuando estoy menos ocupado. El libro que escogería sería” The Remains of the Day” de Kazuo Ishiguro muy bien escrito y hace poco empecé a leer unos libros del autor Surafricano Daimon Galgut. Siempre fui un niño muy tímido y yo estudié en un colegio religioso y me tocaba a mi leer en la misa. Había un profesor de apellido Bailey no recuerdo su nombre, él era estricto pero muy gracioso. Aunque me sentía asustado al leer con el tiempo me dio confianza en mí mismo. 

I used to play golf to a single figure handicap but a back operation some years ago put an end to that. But I still enjoy watching the game along with other sports like tennis and athletics. I have been very lucky to travel widely over the years, both professionally and on holiday, and I would say that South Africa and Thailand are wonderful destinations. Thai food takes some beating. The movie question is difficult as watching films is one of my favourite things to do, but ‘The Godfather Part Two’ was outstanding and one of the rare examples of a sequel being better than the (very good) original. My taste in music is quite eclectic ranging from what I call Classical and operatic ‘greatest hits’ to Dolly Parton, The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, Elvis and many hits from the ‘Eighties’ as well as modern artists such as Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars. Drinking has always been part of my life but I haven’t been drunk for a long time. A good red wine, maybe Italian or Spanish, hits the spot. I read a lot when on holiday or during the winter when my schedule is less busy. It’s hard to pick out one book but ‘The Remains Of The Day’ by Kazuo Ishiguro was beautifully written and I have read a couple of novels recently by South African author Damon Galgut which were very good. In my early years at school, I was a very shy boy and a teacher of religious studies (who was very strict but also very funny) sought to bring me ‘out of my shell’ by making me read the lesson in the morning assembly. It was terrifying prospect at the time but it became a regular weekly task and I became a much more confident person. His name was Bailey (never knew his first name) and, looking back, he did me a great service even though I didn’t see it like that at the time.

10. Your final message to your readers.

Bueno, animaría a cualquiera a que se interese en las carreras de caballos, en un gran deporte, pero también es complicado y necesitas trabajar en él. Traten de enseñar a los nuevos sobre los diferentes tipos de caballos, pedigrees y el sistema de handicappers, este esfuerzo será gratificante. En lo personal, además de narrar y describir carreras aprender sobre lo complejo del deporte y el trabajo que lleva ganar una carrera de manera correcta, lo cual es muy satisfactorio.

Well, I would encourage anyone to take an interest in horse racing. It’s a great sport but also a complicated one which you need to work on. Trying to teach newcomers about the different types of races, horses, pedigrees and then understanding the handicapping system, and so much else, is challenging but I think making the effort can be very rewarding. Personally, apart from the thrill of watching and describing horse races for many years, it is the complexity of the sport and the industry which has proved equally sustaining. And working out which horse will win a race, and being proved correct, is (of course!) always very satisfying.
