My
father was a big horse racing fan. He would take me to the Fair Grounds on
the weekends during the winter and Jefferson Downs in the summer. He was a
typical $2 bettor. He would usually give me a few bucks to play here and
there. | ||

I
called my first race in September of 1981 at Jefferson Downs, the bread
and butter summer track for many Louisiana horsemen. Rick Mocklin, the announcer at the time, gave me the chance
to practice on the roof for several months before letting me call one “live”. Rick went on to train the
great Louisiana-bred mare Monique Rene and also had a successful career
agent for three Hall-of-Fame jockeys. | ||

Who was the most influential person in your

In
horse racing, I would have to say Tom Sweeney, who was the general manager
at Louisiana Downs. He had faith enough to hire me for my first major job
and let try my hand at handicapping, television, morning trackside shows,
and whatever it took to promote racing. In my previous life as a radio
deejay, it was the “Motor
Mouth” Terry Young, who taught me some of his fast-talking skills that
helped me crossover to calling the races. | ||

What do you enjoy most about calling a race and what is the most
difficult? |

I
like calling races because there is a different story line and scenario in
every race. You know when you are in “the flow” of the race and can see
things unfolding exactly as you call them. The most difficult thing about
announcing here in Maryland is the second-wire finish. My booth is located
at the first wire. The horses move away from my point of view and I must
use a television monitor to call the final yards and a close finish if
possible. | ||

Me gusta narrar
carreras porque hay una narración y un escenario diferente en cada
carrera. Tú sabes cuando tu llevas el ritmo de la carrera y cuando ves las

Who is your favorite horse you have called and the best race you have

That’s
a tough one. Having called Preakness for the past 32 years, I would have
to rank American Pharoah and Justify among my
Top 5 for their Triple Crown feats, Afleet Alex
as the best athletic performance, plus Silver Charm in the mix as one of
my all-time favorites for his thrilling win in the 1997 Preakness. Over
the decades, there have been some local blue-collar favorites like Ben’s
Cat and Xtra Heat that have managed to break
through beyond their Maryland roots. | ||

Technology
has made racing wagering available everywhere, but we must never lose
sight of the fact that once first-timers experience the “live” product and get to see
horses up close that a few of them will turn into lifelong fans. More
tracks need to have a concierge to reach out to those folks. Oh…and
let’s have penny breakage
EVERYWHERE.

I
was a 1970’s fast-talking deejay, “Marty with the Party,” at the last
#1 AM station in the country, WTIX. We played all the rock, funky, and
disco hits of the late 70’s. | ||

Food,
drink, and music all lead to my New Orleans roots. I love New Orleans
traditional dishes like jambalaya, red beans and rice, gumbo, and anything
with eggplant. | ||

will try almost any type of beer. | ||

Music:
I am an avid listener and supporter of WWOZ radio in New Orleans, and
especially love R&B from all decades. You too can be a “Guardian of the Groove.” Also a

of memorable writing on Thoroughbred racing. | ||
|
Teacher:
Mr. Tucker. He would play Moody Blues records as part of his instruction.
At least I know about Timothy Leary. | ||

música toda con raíces en New Orleans. Amo los platos tradicionales de New
Orleans como jambalaya, frijoles rojos y arroz,
gumbo, y algo con berenjena, y cualquier tipo de
