1. What is your full name and when and where were you born?

1. ¿Cuál es tu nombre completo y cuándo y dónde naciste?

Andy Serling. I was born in Princeton New Jersey on June 11, 1962

2. How did you get into the sport of horse racing?

2. ¿Cómo entraste en el deporte de las carreras de caballos?

I went to the track with my Dad when I was around ten, and while I wasn't immediately enthralled, when we moved to Saratoga and I went to the track there when I was 12, I fell in love.

I started learning to handicap as a kid when I was 12. Andy Beyer's book (Picking Winners) came out less than a year later and it arguably changed my life, as it helped demonstrate how you could be successful as a handicapper/horseplayer. My first work as a racing analyst was in 1995 when I made some appearances on the NYRA simulcast show.

Fui al hipódromo con mi papá cuando tenía 10 años aproximadamente y no fui inmediatamente atraído, pero cuando nos mudamos a Saratoga y fui al hipódromo cuando tenía 12 años me enamoré de las carreras. Comencé a aprender sobre cómo ser handicaper cuando tenía 12 años. El libro de Andy Beyer (Escogiendo los Ganadores) llegó a mis manos en menos de un año y cambió mi vida, así como también me ayudó a demostrar cómo ser exitoso en el arte del handicaper y como apostador. Mi primer trabajo fue de analista de carreras en 1995 cuando hice algunas apariciones en el programa de simulcast de la NYRA.

3. Who is the most influential person in your career and what are the most important aspects to be a good analyst?

3. ¿Quién es la persona que más influencia ha tenido en tu carrera y cuáles son los aspectos más importantes para ser un buen analista hípico?

I have had many influences, as I met many professional horseplayers when I was very young, and have known a lot of knowledgeable players over the years. I would like to think I learned something from all of them. Andy Beyer was a huge influence given I read Picking Winners (the greatest handicapping book ever written) when I just getting involved in the game and he has been a friend for many years. Steve Crist was also a great help to me as he was the first person to hire me to work on TV as an analyst, and he continued to support me by putting me on the Daily Racing Form seminars in Saratoga beginning in 1999.

The best? I can't answer that but I think in order to be a good analyst you need to put in a lot of time daily studying the races, but also be your own toughest critic, as you should always be analyzing your work to see what you can do better.

Yo he tenido muchas influencias, ya que he conocido muchos apostadores profesionales cuando era muy joven y he aprendido mucho de los jugadores con conocimientos sobre apuestas durante todos estos años. Me inclino a pensar que yo aprendí algo de todos ellos. Andy Beyer tuvo una gran influencia dado que leí Escogiendo Ganadores, (el mejor libro sobre handicapper escrito alguna vez) cuando yo me empezaba a involucrar en el juego y Beyer ha sido mi amigo durante muchos años. Steve Crist fue de gran ayuda para mí y él fue la primera persona en contratarme para trabajar en televisión como analista y continúo apoyándome en la presentación de seminarios en el Daily Racing Form en Saratoga a principios de 1999.

Lo mejor, no puedo responderte eso, pero creo que para ser un buen analista necesitas mucho tiempo para estudiar diariamente las carreras, pero también necesitas ser fuertemente crítico contigo mismo como también lo debes ser al analizar una carrera y ver cómo puedes hacerlo mejor.   

4. What do you enjoy most about being a handicapper and what is the most difficult?          

4. ¿Qué es lo que más disfrutas de ser un handicapper y qué es lo más difícil?

I find handicapping to be the most enjoyable part of my job, as I enjoy taking a race apart, and trying to figure out what matters the most in any given race. Ideally you can engage in an intelligent conversation about the races. I guess the most difficult part is being right on any consistent basis, but that's always the challenge.

Yo encuentro el ser handicapper como la parte más agradable de mi trabajo, como también disfruto descomponer una carrera y tratar de descifrar que es lo más importante que sucede en la carrera. Idealmente tu puedes comprometerte en una inteligente conversación sobre las carreras. Supongo que la parte más difícil es ser acertado sobre una base consistente, pero esto siempre es un reto.    

5. What is your favorite horse?

5. ¿Cuál es tu caballo favorito?

I don't have a particular favorite horse as there have been many over the years that I loved. The best two horses I saw race were probably Spectacular Bid and Seattle Slew.

No tengo un caballo favorito en particular ya que ha habido muchos durante todos estos años que yo ame. Los dos mejores caballos que yo vi correr fueron probablemente Spectacular Bid y Seattle Slew.

6. If there is anything you could change about horse racing, what would it be?

6. Si hubiese algo que tú pudieses cambiar en el hipismo ¿Qué sería?

What I would change is too broad a question. Perhaps I would like the industry as a whole to be more proactive as, unfortunately, we are too frequently reactive.

Lo que yo pudiera cambiar, es una pregunta muy amplia. Quizás me gustaría la industria como un todo sea más proactiva pues nosotros somos frecuentemente demasiado reactivos.

7. What is something that would surprise people about you?

7. Algo que sorprendería a las personas sobre ti

I have no idea what would surprise people about me. It's impossible for me to know. Sorry. A lot of things about me are fairly common knowledge.

No tengo idea de que sorprendería a la gente sobre mí. Es imposible para mí saberlo. Lo siento. Muchas de mis cosas son del dominio público.

8. What is your favorite: hobby, sport, food, drink, place, movie, music, book and teacher?

8. ¿Cuál es tu hobby, deporte, comida, bebida, lugar, película, música, libro y profesor favorito?

My favorite hobby would be racing. My favorite sport is basketball. I eat most foods and go out to eat a lot. I do like oysters a lot. Favorite drink? I like bourbon but try lots of drinks. Saratoga is my favorite place. I love lots of movies, and have seen thousands, so it's hard to narrow it down to one, but maybe Chinatown. I feel similarly about books, as I read a lot, but American Pastoral by Philip Roth is up there (as are many Roth books) and pretty much any book by Gary Shteyngart. As far as music, I love the Grateful Dead and saw them around 300 times (before Jerry Garcia died). My favorite teacher is a funny question, but probably Bob Burke, my 6th grade teacher when my family first moved to Saratoga.

Mi hobby favorito sería las carreras de caballos, mi deporte favorito es el básquetbol, Yo como la mayoría de las comidas y salgo mucho a comer afuera. Me gusta mucho las ostras. ¿Bebida favorita? Me gusta el Bourbon, pero pruebo muchas bebidas. Saratoga es mi lugar preferido, amo muchas películas y he visto miles, es difícil escoger una, pero, quizás Chinatown. Lo mismo con referencia a los libros ya que he leído muchos, pero American Pastoral de Philip Roth está arriba como muchos libros de Roth y muchos otros libros de Gary Shteyngart. En cuanto a la música, amo The Grateful Death y los he visto alrededor de 300 veces (antes de que Jerry García muriera). Mi profesor favorito es una pregunta graciosa, pero probablemente Bob Burke, mi profesor de 6to grado cuando mi familia se mudó a Saratoga.     

9. What is your final message to your readers?

9. ¿Cuál es tu mensaje final a todos tus lectores?

To handicappers I would say to keep trying to learn and better your game, from handicapping to betting. Don't just accept what others tell you, and learn for yourself what works and what doesn't work for you. Racing is the most interesting game in the world and we will never know everything about it. There is always something new and interesting to learn.

A los handicappers les diría que sigan aprendiendo y mejorando de handicapear a las apuestas. No acepten únicamente lo que otros le dicen, aprendan por ustedes mismos lo que les funciona y los que no les funciona. Las carreras de caballos es el juego más interesante del mundo y nunca sabremos todo en las carreras. Siempre habrá algo nuevo e interesante que aprender.
